The Wheel of the Year

As Pagans, we align with the Moon and celebrate Esbats, which marks the Moons Phases, New, Waxing, Full and Waning and Quarter Moons. They mark the moon's passage around the Earth, Birth and Life. There are 13 in the Year.

We also celebrate and honour the eight Sabbats, the solar festivals in the annual cycle of the Sacred Wheel of the Year.

Samhain
(Sow-een)
31st October

This is the "Wiccan or Witches New Year".  It is the time when the veil between the world of the living and the veil of the dead it at its thinnest. This is when the departed are able to cross to our realm.

At Samhain, we lay down our grief at the loss of loved ones and send them our love and blessings.  It is good practice to lay a "dumb place setting" at your table to invite your loved ones to join you for you Samhain feast.

Samhain is the last harvest, the "Feast of the Dead". Harvests are complete at this time. This is the time that we focus on the lessons learned in the year to this point. It is also a good time to lay down your intentions for the coming new year.

A Blessing for the Coming New Year

May you be Blessed With Prosperity and Wealth

May you thrive in good Health

May Love and Light Come Your Way

On each and every Blessed Day

May you find your hearts Desire

By Earth and Air, By Water and Fire

May the Goddess guide You

May the Lord lead you Through

By Her Moons Light

By His Darkness Bright

In Perfect Trust and Harmony

In Love and Light, So Mote it BE!

Blessed Be

The Charge of the Dark Goddess..

Listen to the words of the Dark Mother...

Who of old was called Hecate, Nuit, Morrigan, Banba, Erda, Macha, Mothernight, Sekmet and many other names.

Whenever you seek wisdom, at the time of the darkening moon, come together in love and trust and learn of Me, who am the wisest of crones.

Ye who search the mysteries of the Earth, the secrets of Air and Darkness, of Blood Fire, the silence of the utmost stars, come unto Me and I shall whisper to you in the depths of Midnight.

Ye shall approach me in silence, as as a sign that ye are free from fear, your breast you shall bare to My blade.  For fear has no place in My mysteries, and that which you seek of Me will destroy you if you fear it, for I am the Dolmen Arch beyond which stretches the mysteries of infinity.

I am the silence before birth and after death.  I am the clouded mirror in which you scry your own soul.  I am the mist in the Twilight, the vast and starry sky of Midnight, shadows on the Moon.

All things come to Me in the end, and yet I am the beginning of All.

I meet you at the Crossroads.

I lead you through the Darkness.

My hand you grasp in  the passage between worlds.

To those who toy with Me, I am an instrument of self destruction.

Yet to the Seeker, I bring knowledge beyond mortal comprehension.

Of you, I shall demand the utter truth of all that you are

In return shall I give you all that you may be, all that I am

For My wisdom is beyond the ages

Knowledge of  My secrets is power over self

Over fear, over death.

Nor do I demand aught of you which you cannot give

For I am the Mother of Mysteries

As you know me

So shall you learn to know yourself

Yule     20th - 23rd December

Yule arrives in the dead of Winter.  It is when the Sun God is reborn to the Mother Goddess, who then becomes the Crone and retreats into Her slumber.  It is believed that this slumber is the reason for the darkest and coldest days of Winter.
Yule is a celebration of the longest night.  From this point, the nights will grow shorter until Midsummer.
A Yule Log is burned during this festival, typically, a log of Ash wood, to bring warmth to our hearts, and remind us of the blessed fires of Summer.  The decorated tree represents the return of light after the dark days of winter, it also represents everlasting life and Fertility.  The Tree of Life.  The Tree is hung with Lights and baubles  to represent the returning Sun.

The Night Before Yule

Twas the night before Yuletide and all through the Glen
Not a creature was stirring
Not a fox or a Hen
A mantle of snow shone brightly that Night
As it lay on the ground, reflecting
Moonlight

The Faeries were nestled all snug in their Trees
Unmindful of flurries and a chilly North Breeze
The Elves and the Gnomes were down in their Burrows
Sleeping like babies in their soft earthen Furrows

When lo! The earth moved with a thunderous Quake
Causing chairs to fall over and dishes to Break
The little folk scrambled to get on their Feet
Then raced to the river where they usually Meet

What happened?  They wondered, they questioned, they probed
As they shivered in their night Clothes
Some bare-armed, some Robed
What caused the Earth's Shudder?
What caused Her to Shiver?
They all spoke at once as they stood
By the River

Then what to their wondering Eyes
Should Appear
But a shining gold light in the Shape
Of a Sphere
It blinked and it twinkled, it Winked
Like an Eye
Then it flew straight and was Lost
In the Sky

Before they could murmur, Before
They could Bustle
There emerged from the crowd, With a swish and a Bustle
A Stately old Crone with her Hand
On a Cane
Resplendent in green, with a Flowing
White Mane

As She passed them by, the old Crone's
Perfume
Smelling of Meadows and Flowers
In Bloom
Made each of the Fey Folk Think
Of Spring
When the Earth wakes from Her
Slumber and the Birds start to Sing

"My name is Gaia"  The old Crone Proclaimed, in a voice that was Both Wild and Tamed
" I've Come to remind you, for you Seem to Forget, that Yule is the Time of
Re-birth, and Yet"
"I see no hearth fires, Hear no Music
or Bells,
The Earth isn't filled with rich Fragrant smells of baking and Roasting, and simmering Stews

Of cider that's mulled or other Hot
Brews"
"There aren't any children at play in the Snow
Or houses lit up by Candles Glow"
"Have you forgotten, My children
The fun of celebrating the Rebirth of the Sun!"

She looked at the Fey folk, Her eyes going round
As they shuffled their feet and stared at the Ground
Then She smiled the smile that brings Light to the Day
"Come My Children"  She Said "Lets
Play"

They gathered the mistletoe, gathered the Holly.
Threw off the drab and drew on the Jolly  They lit a big bonfire, and they danced and Sang
They bought out the bells and clapped when they Rang

They strung lights on the Trees
and Bows, oh so Many
In colours of Cranberry, Bayberry and Cherry
They build giant snowmen and adorned them with Hats
Then surrounded them with Snow Birds and Snow Cats and Bats

Then just before dawn, at the end of their Fest
Before they went homeward to seek out their Rest
The Fey Folk they gathered 'round Their favourite Oak Tree
And Welcomed the Sun 'neath the trees Finery

They were just reaching Home
When it suddenly Came
The gold light returned
Like an arrow - shot Flame
It lit on the Treetop where they
Could see from Afar
The golden-like sphere turned into a Star

The old Crone just Smiled
at the beautiful Sight
"Happy Yultide, My Children"
She whispered "Good Night"

Waning Crescent Moon

The Waning Crescent Moon is the last phase of the Moon before it returns to a Dark moon.  It appears in the East before Dawn, as a thin crescent, with the illuminated side always pointing East. Each morning, the waning crescent moon shows less of its illuminated side, rising closer to the sunrise.
This phase symbolises a time for rest and rejuvenation.
A time to recharge and prepare for the next Lunar Cycle.
A time to find inner peace and reconnect with yourself.
A time to surrender to the natural flow of life and let go of attachments.
A time to turn inwards and reflect on what was and how to make things better.  A time to embrace feelings of thoughtfulness and growth orientation.

Moon on Dark Water

I am the Moon  shining on Dark Water
I am the Reflection in a lightless Room
I am that which is within You
And can only be seen from Outside
For My Love Mountains have Moved
And the Seas have lain Still
I am the want in the mouths of the Wealthy and I am the need in the hearts of the Poor
I am the cruelty within the Sunlight
And I am the Rest in the Light of
the Moon
In times past, I have been Joy and
Sorrow, Pain and Healing, Lust
and Innocence.
In times to come I will be Hope and
Futility, Faith and Despair
I am that which lies Inside
And can only be seen from Without
Anid I am that which is all Around
and can only be known from Within
For in My Love there is Death
And in my Love there is Knowledge
Know that to find me, You Must
Cease Looking, and to Know Me
Will be to find Yourself.
So Look again on the Moon of Hecate
So Look again on the Moon of Ages
Look again at the Light in the Blackness
Look once more again at the Self in Unself
And the Unself in Self
Glory, Revel, Feast in the Knowing of Me

Blessed Be

Artemis is a member of the 12 Olympians.  She was the Greek goddess of the hunt and the wild. Wild animals, Nature, Vegetation, Childbirth, the care of children and Chastity. The twin sister of Apollo.  Artemis was another child of Zeus. In later times, she was identified with Selene, the personification of the moon.  She is said to roam the forests and mountains attended by her entourage of nymphs.

Artemis was worshipped as one of the primary goddesses of childbirth and midwives alongside Hera.  She was also a patron of healing and disease, and is believed to send good health to women and children.  She is also the goddess of virginity, young women, chastity.  She was one of the three virgin goddessess, alongside Athena, and Hestia.  Artemis preferred to remain an unmarried maiden and was one of the three Greek goddesses over whom Aphrodite had no power.

Artemis was one of the most widely venerated of the Ancient Greek deities; Her worship spread throughout ancient Greece, with her multiple temples, altars and shrines, and local worship is found everywhere in the ancient world.  Her great temple at Ephesus was one of the "Seven Wonders of the World", before it was burnt to the ground.

Artemis symbols include a bow, a quiver, hunting knives and the deer.  Sacred to her was the Cypress. She is particularly worshipped at festivals during the Spring.  Her Roman Counterpart was Diana.

Homeric Hymn 27 to Artemis (p1-9)

I sing of Artemis, whose shafts are of gold
Who cheers on the hounds
The pure Maiden
Shooter of Stags
Who delights in Archery
Own sister to Apollo with the Golden Sword
Over the shadowy hills and windy peaks
She draws her golden bow
Rejoicing in the chase
And sends out grievous shafts.
The tops of the mountains tremble
And the tangled wood echoes awsomely
With the outcry of Beasts
Earthquakes and the Sea
Also where fishes Shoal

Athena - Homeric Hymn

Grey-eyed One, I Sing of You,
Wisest and most Beautiful,
Relentless Athena,
Protector of Cities
Strong armed and Fair

From his head the great god birthed You
dressed in golden armour and bearing a
sharp spear.

The Holy mountains shook when you were born, and the earth quaked,
and the sea's dark waves broke against the land.

Even the Sun stopped in astonishment at this sight, this goddess, fresh-born and strong.

Hail to you Athena, May I never live without the shield of your protection.

Demeter and Persephone

Demeter's daughter Persephone, was taken by Hades, the King of the Underworld after Zeus gave his permission for them to be married.
Demeter searched frantically everywhere for her daughter with Hecate, but was unable to find her.  While she was searching for her, she neglected her duties as Goddess of Agriculture and the Earth was struck by a deadly famine, where nothing would grow and people died.
Finally, Helios, the God of the Sun who sees everything, told Demeter where Persephone was. Demeter went to Zeus and pleaded with him for Persephone's
safe return to her.  Zeus ordered Hades to return Persephone to Demeter, However, Hades had fed Persephone pomegranite seeds, while she was in the Underworld, this meant that Persephone could not stay with Demeter forever, but must return to the Underworld for six months of the year to be with her husband. This explains the seasonal cycle as Demeter lets nothing grow when Persephone is in the Underworld with her husband Hades.

The Charge of the Crone...

Hear the words of the Dark Goddess
Who stands within the Crossroads
Whose torch illuminates the Underworld
I am the Queen of Magic and the Dark of the Moon,
Hidden in there deepest Night
I am the Mystery of the Otherworld
And the fear that coils around your Heart
in the time of your Trials
I am the Soul of Nature
That gives form to the Universe
It is I that await you at the end of the Spiral Dance
Most ancient among gods and Mortals
Let my worship be within the Heart
of that which has truly tasted Life
For Behold, all acts of Magic and Art
are my Pleasure
and my greatest rival is Love Itself
Therefore, let there be Beauty in your Strength
Compassion in your Wrath
Power in your Humility
And discipline balanced through
Mirth and Reverence
You who seek to remove my Veil
And behold my true Face
Know that all you questioning
And efforts are for Nothing
Unless you know My Mystery
Look wherever you Will
It will elude you
For it is within you
And Nowhere Else
For Behold
I have ever been with You
From the very Beginning
The comforting hand that nurtured You
In the Dawn of Life
And the loving embrace that awaits You
At the end of Life
For I am that which is Attained
At the end of the Dance
And I am the Womb of new Beginings
As yet, unimagined and Unknown

Tools

Gathering together your tools serve as confirmation to the pursuit of your beliefs and will enhance your experience. Tools are used for ritual purposes, a and to invoke the deities, banish negativity and direct energy. Although tools are not always necessary for the witch, they enrich rituals and symbolise complex energies. However,  these complex energies are channelled and shaped through the will of the individual.

The Athame (ath-a-mee)  -is a tool which is male, and a weapon of Air, through which firey energy may be channelled.  It is purely a ritual tool and should never be used for cutting.  It is traditional for witches to dull the blade of their Athame.  It normally has a black handle, because black absorbs energy.  Its decoration is entirely personal.  Some can be plain, some may have magickal symbols on the handle, some can be enriched with jewels or crystals.  It should be made with natural materials which will ensure a better channelling of energy.

The Wand  - is normally made from wood, such as Hazel or nut etc.  That is a personal choice. If wood is used it should be at least of a years growth - when harvesting it for this purpose, it should be done at dawn on a Wednesday.  Don't forget to ask the trees permission and leave an offering of maybe a crystal or tobacco.
There are also a variety of other tools used to make wands these days, such as copper, steel, crystal.  Again it is a matter of choice.  it should measure from the crook of the elbow to the end of the forefinger.  When not in use, it should be stored in a dark bag to prevent being exposed to sunlight only for magickal or ritual purposes.

The Bowl or Chalice - This symbolises the Goddess; it is a feminine object and represents the element of Water. During ritual, it holds the sacred water, when mixed with salt.  It can also be used to contain energies before they are released.

The Pentacle - This is attributed to Earth. It can be made of wood, metal , wax or stone.

The Censor - This burns incense and is attributed to the Element of Air.  It is important to mention whenever burning incense, the censer must be fireproof.  If burning natural incense in its raw form, put a layer of sand at the bottom.

Dish of Salt - Salt is associated with the Element of Earth.  It is used to make sacred water.  It also absorbs negativity.

Cauldron - This is a symbol of the Goddess.  It is seen as the womb of the Goddess.  It is where magick wells up and is the font of life.  It is usually three legged and has a handle
so it can be suspended over an open fire.  Cauldrons come in many shapes and sizes.  Miniature ones are popular for standing on the altar to hold spells and herbs and candles.

Besom or Broom - The Besom has a long history of tradition. Witches were said to fly high on their brooms.  This of course, was not possible in the physical world But what about the magickal world? The Besom has been used for example, as a powerful tool against curses and practitioners of evil magic. Laid across the threshold, the broom halted all spells sent to the house or those within.  It is is used by Witches as a cleaning tool.  Before casting a circle, a besom is used to clear away any negative energy.  The Besom is sacred to the Goddess and the God.

Crystal Ball - It is rare to find a clear crystal ball, and they can be expensive.
The crystal ball is a symbol of the Moon  and the Goddess.  It is also be used for scrying
or to store physic energy.  A crystal ball should never be exposed to sunlight and should      be wrapped in a dark cloth, or pouch.  Once a month, it should be bathed in the light of
the Full Moon to recharge its energies.

The Boline - As we never use our Athame to cut anything, another knife is used.  A Boline, which usually has a white handle, but any knife can be used.  It is generally used to cut flowers, herbs, to inscribe candles and cut cords and to carve magickal inscriptions onto wood, wax, stone etc.  It is only used for magickal work.

Cords - Witches often have a set of three cords - which are nine feet long with a know at each end.  Popular colours are Black, Silver and Gold - representing the Moon, the Sun and the Earth.  They are generally used in magickal work when a binding is needed.

The Scourge - Primarily a symbol of the severity of the Goddess.

Altars

The Altar is a place of Peace and Sanctuary.  It is where you go to honour your deities, leave offerings and give reverence to the Elements.  It is the focal point of Rituals.
Here you can work your Magick or light a candle or incense daily.

Altars come in many shapes and sizes.  The variation is up to you. You can have more that one in your home, and outside in your sacred space.  You need a space you can dedicate to your Craft, somewhere it won't be disturbed or touched.

Altars can be simple, elaborate or traditional.  They can have representations of your deities, tools for your magickal workings and special things unique to you.

Most Altars face a certain direction or are central (as in Coven groups).
North - The Element of Earth, associated with home, security
fertility, wisdom and balance.
South - The Element of Fire, associated with energy, passion,
creativity and transformation.
East - The Element of Air, associated with communication
new beginnings, the rising Sun and new growth.
West - The Element of Water, associated with water, emotion,
psyche, movement, feeling, reflection and death.

Garden Altars can encompass a water feature facing West,
A Fire pit facing South, Incense censor facing East and of course
Plants, flowers and herbs facing North for Earth.  You can include
feathers, crystals, windspinners, anything you wish.  Be creative.
